Summer 2026 Workshops
Fiction: “Stories that POP”
Bring some Sizzle to Your Summer Writing!
Using a combination of quick writes, mentor texts, and prompts, we will experiment with interesting characters, dynamic plots, and vivid settings. Participants will apply feedback from the group and facilitators, as well as revision strategies, and watch their ideas transform and POP off the page. Because we want participants to read as writers and write as readers, we will surround ourselves with good literature and incorporate independent reading time in each session.

Poetry: “Poetry Breathes”
POETRY BREATHES
Every color, smell, and new sign of life often feels like a topic for a poem. Make these kernels of life POP as we experiment with quick writes, prompts, and various forms of poetry. Utilize thoughtful feedback and focused revision strategies, and watch your observations of the world come to life. Reading good poetry makes us better writers of poetry, so we will surround ourselves with rich anthologies of poetry and incorporate independent reading time in each session.

Journaling: Finding Your Voice
Discovering Journaling as a way to EXPRESS Yourself.
A space for young writers to build fluency in writing through journaling. We’ll use mentor texts, read-alouds, and creative prompts to inspire writing within the ongoing practice of reading as writers and writing as readers. Journaling can help children find their words, discover their voice, and fall in love with writing. We’ll set participants up for an ongoing practice of journaling and offer optional opportunities to check in on the process throughout the rest of the summer (additional dates TBD).

Journaling:Get Your Ink Flowing
Giving Your Original Ideas a Voice
In a world where original ideas often struggle to have a voice, journaling can help young people find their words and fall in love with writing. This workshop will create a space for students in grades 6 – 12 to explore journaling as a means of expression and building writing fluency. Each week, we will use quickwrites, mentor texts, and writing prompts to explore the ideas in their journals. In an effort to get participants to read as writers and write as readers, this workshop will also encourage independent reading of literature that has taken shape through journals or diaries.
